I love movies. Watching them, reading trivia about them, recommending them… So today that’s what I’m going to do; recommend some of my favourite teenaged movies. By teenaged movies I mean teenage centric movies or movies aimed at an adolescent audience — at least in my mind. This list is in no particular order — other than the fact I've added the most common (but still some of my favourite) movies at the end.
PALO ALTO.
First things first, the dialogue between the teens in this movie and the events that occur are very relatable. We all have a friend like Fred (Nat Wolff) and if you don’t then you’re probably that friend. Sure some of the scenes in this move may feel awkward but thats real life, thats what it's like in those situations. This movie will make you fall in love with Teddy (Jack Kilmer) or so it did for me. I don’t fully understand the message behind this movie but i think it’s to do with sexual abuse, which is a running theme in the movie but its unspoken and made to seem okay which is much like real sexual abuse. Which would also explain the ‘James Franco teenager Instagram scandal’ as promotion for this movie.
DAZED AND CONFUSED.
This movie was made in the 90’s, based on the 70’s and boy will it make you want to live back in those days. If life were like this movie it’d be so much more carefree and easy. I don’t know how realistic it is for the year it's based in but it seems pretty realistic for the main part. You can tell how the times have changed.
Dazed and Confused is a feel good comedy surrounding the lives of students on their last day of school before summer starts. Them being at school is a rather small aspect considering they don’t go to class much and they’re more excited about the party thats on tonight. This movie is one that I can watch time and time again.Oh and the soundtrack! The soundtrack for this movie is awesome but it’s based in the 70’s so that’s a given.
Fun Fact: This movie is where Mathew McConaughey iconic catchphrase “Alright, Alright, Alright” first came from.
CRUEL INTENTIONS.
Fucked up, but a good movie. That is how I explain this movie to others. If you liked Gossip Girl you'd like this. It's similar to Gossip Girl but older and more twisted. This was one of those movies that was always on tv growing up, but never really interested me until I turned 14 maybe? And after properly watching it for the first time after all those years it became one of my all time favourites. Full warning — this movie is pretty twisted and sexual.Set in New York, the plot is a bet between two step siblings to take the new principal's daughter’s virginity… The ending of this movie will leave you feeling upset, vengeful and in love with Sebastian (Ryan Philippe). The songs Colorblind by the Counting Crows and Bitter Sweet Symphony by the Verve have a special place in my heart because of this movie.
STUCK IN LOVE.
Okay so kind of a teenaged movie but not really because I'd recommend this for my mum to watch. This movie stars Nat Wolff and Logan Lerman; need I say more? Stuck in Love takes place over the course of a year and you see the lives of a family — the divorced parents and their two teenaged children. This movie will make you laugh, smile and cry. I recommend this movie for the whole family to watch. (Apparently the title for this movie has changed to ‘A Place for Me’ but it’ll always be Stuck In Love to me.)
BLUE CRUSH.
Oh how this movie will make you want to be a surfer and grow up in Hawaii with your best friends, or so that’s how I felt watching this movie growing up. I tend to forget about this movie at times but I really shouldn’t. It's a fun movie that I enjoy watching whenever I remember to watch it. The plot? Anne Marie has the Pipe Masters surfing contest in a few weeks and needs to spend her spare time practising but she finds herself getting distracted instead by the new guy Matt.
10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU.
What can I say about this movie? It’s hilarious and if I had to pick the number one movie for teenagers, this would be it. I don’t think there’s anything about this movie that I dislike. For those of you who haven't seen this —Ahem Rama— stop what you’re doing right now and go and watch and fall involve with Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger). Oh and be sure to look out for Patrick's cover of Can't Take My Eyes Off You in the movie — so much better than Frankie Valli's original in my opinion.
CLUELESS.
Ugh as if I wouldn't have this on my list even though its the most common teenager-y movie. I fell in love with this movie at a young age (same with 10 Things I Hate About You). Being a young girl watching this movie you’d dream to have Cher’s life; her house, her car and of course her wardrobe with that computer outfit choosing thing!Fun fact: The scene where Tye (Britney Murphy) says the line “you’re a virgin who can’t drive”, in real life Britney Murphy was actually a virgin who couldn’t drive when that scene was taped.
Honourable mentions to: The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Easy A, The Sisterhood of Travelling Pants, Bring it on and Empire Records.
